It was founded around 1119 in Jerusalem as a group formed by blood and kinship ties to protect Christian pilgrims. They quickly became stronger thanks to the support of the Catholic church. Their successes are in parallel with the Crusader army. Knights have existed for many years with a much larger, more complex and deeper network than an order.
